Does background music hurt memory?
For a specific and important kind of memory, yes. Nick Perham and Joanne Vizard tested people on serial recall — remembering items in the correct order — while background sound played, and compared it against quiet. Performance was worse with music than in silence.
The striking result was what happened when they accounted for taste. Participants performed worse with music whether they liked it or disliked it. Enjoying the track made the experience more pleasant without making the recall any better, which is precisely the combination that keeps the habit alive.
Serial recall is a narrower task than "studying" in general, and it's worth being precise about that rather than overclaiming. But it maps onto a great deal of real revision — anything where sequence carries meaning, from the stages of mitosis to the order of operations to a list of verb conjugations.
Why does music interfere?
The leading explanation is the irrelevant sound effect. When you hold items in order — a list, a sequence of steps, a formula's terms — you rely on a mental process that handles order. Sound that changes from moment to moment carries its own order information, and the two streams collide.
That predicts something useful: what matters isn't volume or whether you enjoy it, but how much the sound changes. Steady, unvarying sound interferes far less than sound with a strong changing pattern — which is exactly what lyrics and shifting melodies provide.
The mechanism explains an otherwise confusing pattern in people's experience. Students often report that music helps them concentrate, and for sustained attention on non-ordered work that report may well be accurate. The interference is specific to holding sequence, which is why the subjective sense of focus and the measured drop in recall can coexist without either being a lie.
So is all music equally bad?
No, and this is where the practical advice lives. The problem is acoustic variation competing with ordered material, so the closer a sound is to unchanging, the less it costs you.
That's why steady ambient noise tends to be relatively harmless while a playlist of songs you love is not. The affection you have for the playlist is irrelevant to the mechanism — it just makes it harder to give up.
A useful test for any given track: could you predict what the next few seconds sound like? Steady rain, a fan, or a flat ambient drone score high on that and interfere little. A song with verses, choruses, and a key change scores low, and lyrics are the worst case because they introduce language that competes directly with verbal material.

If your realistic choice is between a playlist and an audible television, take the playlist — just don't mistake that trade-off for evidence that music aids memorisation.

Second, individual variation is real even where the average effect is clear. The average finding is the right default, not a law about you specifically.
Why does studying with music feel like it works?
Because it improves mood and makes sitting down easier, and both of those are real benefits that are easy to confuse with better learning. A session you actually start and stay in for an hour is worth more than a perfect silent session you keep postponing.
But mood and encoding are separate things. The honest summary is that music can help you begin studying and can make an unpleasant environment tolerable, while making the memorisation itself slightly harder. Use it accordingly rather than treating it as either a study hack or a sin.
The motivational benefit is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing. Adherence dominates optimisation in practice: a slightly worse method you use five days a week beats a better method you avoid. If music is what gets you to the desk, the sensible move is to keep it for the approach and drop it for the encoding, not to abandon it and study less.
What's a sensible setup?
Split your session by task type instead of picking one rule for everything. Put music where it costs nothing and silence where it pays.
If you want to settle it for your own case, run the comparison properly. Study two comparable batches of ordered material, one with music and one without, and test yourself on both the next day rather than at the end of the session.
