How AP exams are scored

Every AP exam combines its sections into a composite using official weights — multiple choice and free response counting exactly as much as College Board says they do — and then converts that composite to the 1–5 scale. The conversion moves a little every year with exam difficulty, which is why any calculator (including this one) is an estimate: the weights are official, the cutoffs are compiled from released exams.
