How your GPA is calculated

Each letter grade maps to points on the 4.0 scale. Your GPA is the credit-weighted average: multiply each course's points by its credits, add them up, and divide by your total credits — so a 4-credit class moves the number more than a 1-credit elective. For the weighted GPA, Honors classes earn an extra 0.5 points and AP, IB, or college-level classes an extra 1.0 before averaging.

GPA calculator: FAQ

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA grades every class on the same 4.0 scale, no matter how hard the class is. Weighted GPA gives tougher courses extra credit — typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB, or college-level classes — so an A in AP Biology counts as 5.0 instead of 4.0. This calculator shows both at once.
How do I calculate a semester GPA vs a cumulative GPA?
The math is identical: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add everything up, and divide by the total credits. For a semester GPA, enter only that semester's courses. For a cumulative GPA, enter every course you've completed so far — the credit weighting handles the rest.
Is a 3.7 GPA good?
Yes — a 3.7 unweighted GPA is an A- average, which puts you in strong shape for most colleges and scholarships. The most selective schools tend to admit students closer to 3.9–4.0 unweighted, so course rigor and an upward trend matter alongside the number itself.
Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?
Both. Many colleges recalculate applicants' GPAs with their own formula so everyone is compared fairly, but your transcript shows the full picture either way: unweighted GPA shows raw performance, and weighted GPA shows how much you challenged yourself. Keeping both strong is the safest strategy.
