How the required score is calculated

Your course grade is a weighted average: the work you've already done counts for (100% − the final's weight), and the final fills in the rest. The calculator solves that equation for the final: required score = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. With an 82% average and a final worth 30%, finishing at 85% means scoring about 94% on the exam — while 90% overall would take 108.7%, which no final can deliver. Anything at or under 100% is in your hands; the rest is a signal to adjust the target.

How do I calculate what I need on my final?
The formula is: required score = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with the final's weight written as a decimal. Say you have an 82% and the final is worth 30% of your grade: reaching 85% overall takes (85 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 ≈ 94% on the final. This calculator runs that math for you instantly.
How do I find out how much my final is worth?
Check your syllabus or your school's online gradebook — the grading-policy section usually lists a percentage next to the final exam. Finals are commonly worth 10–30% of the course grade. If your class grades by categories (homework, tests, final), the final's category weight is the number to enter.
What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?
That target isn't reachable from the final alone. Lower the target until the required score dips under 100% to find the best grade you can still finish with, and look for other points — remaining assignments, test corrections, or extra credit — before the term ends.
Can a final exam lower my grade?
Yes. Your course grade is the weighted average of your current grade and the final, so scoring below your current average pulls the overall grade down in proportion to the final's weight — and scoring above it pulls the grade up the same way. That's why a heavily weighted final can swing a grade in either direction.
